Holiday season, rising online risks

As the Christmas season approaches, not only does the number of online purchases and digital transactions increase, but so does the frequency of cybersecurity incidents and online fraud. Cybercriminals consciously exploit the holiday rush, inattention, and increased interest in promotions, which is why conscious and careful internet use is especially important during this period.

One of the most common threats is phishing attacks, in which users receive deceptive emails, messages, or links to fake websites. These often come from well-known courier services, online stores, or financial institutions, and are designed to obtain personal information, login information, or credit card details. Fake shipping notifications and emails promising “limited time” discounts are especially common during the holiday season.

Another growing risk is fake online stores, which often look deceptively similar to real sites. These sites often fail to fulfill orders or use the data provided during the purchase for further abuse.

To reduce your risk, it's worth keeping some basic cybersecurity principles in mind. It's important to use strong, unique passwords and implement multi-factor authentication on all services where available. It's also recommended to regularly update your operating systems and applications, as updates often contain critical security fixes.

It is especially important to recognize suspicious signals during online communication. In the case of messages from unknown senders, or in the case of requests with unusual content or an urgent tone, caution is always warranted. It is advisable to check web addresses before clicking on links and, if possible, make purchases directly on official websites.

The holiday season is also a great time to raise cybersecurity awareness not only among ourselves, but also among our family and friends. A quick conversation or sharing some basic advice can significantly reduce the chances of someone falling victim to online fraud.

Christmas is also about trust and security. In the digital space, this can be achieved with awareness, proper protection and precautions. The Hungarian Cybersecurity Cluster considers it particularly important to raise awareness of the role of online security during the holiday season and to support users in recognizing and preventing risks.
