New challenges for IT higher education in the era of artificial intelligence

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming the IT profession and related higher education programs. György Eigner, Dean of the John von Neumann Faculty of Informatics at Óbuda University, spoke in a recent interview about how the pace of technological development requires greater adaptation from both universities and early-career professionals.

Traditional entry-level positions are gradually being squeezed out of the labor market, while companies are looking for fresh graduates for increasingly complex tasks. This creates a new situation in higher education as well, as curricula are only able to keep up with the rapidly changing technological environment to a limited extent. Óbuda University therefore uses a flexible training model that allows for the continuous renewal of professional content and its adaptation to industrial expectations.

The emergence of artificial intelligence does not diminish the importance of programming knowledge, but rather emphasizes new types of competencies. The IT professional of the future must be able to think systems-wide, solve complex problems, and critically evaluate AI-supported solutions. Engineering approaches and collaboration will continue to be essential in the profession.

The legal and ethical aspects of artificial intelligence are increasingly being addressed in training courses. Students are introduced to the European Union regulatory environment, including the provisions of the AI Act, so that they can apply the technology responsibly and legally in practice.

Óbuda University actively builds relationships with industrial partners in the fields of cybersecurity, robotics and artificial intelligence. The modern laboratory background and project-based education provide students with the opportunity to gain marketable practical experience during their studies. The goal is for graduates to enter the world of the digital economy well-prepared and with competitive knowledge.
